ARCHIPELAGO
Spanish, strategy and survival.
Let's build paradise together.
Brief Description:
Archipelago is an experiential learning game of strategy and survival. Each student will be governor of an uninhabited, undeveloped island in an undiscovered Archipelago, or federation of islands. Each governor must develop his or her island into a livable place.
By bouncing back from bad luck, capitalizing on good luck, collecting "tesoros del mar" (sea treasures), jewels and building materials, welcoming and employing immigrants with critical expertise, and building wind-powered gardens, hospitals, libraries, schools, etc. the students will transform their islands into vibrant and sustainable communities.
Collaboration: Everyone Wins or No One Wins
While each island governor must focus on surviving and developing his or her island to meet individual goals by the end of the school year, in order to win the game the entire Archipelago must also meet its benchmark goals by May. As such, each governor must balance the needs of his/her individual island with the overarching federation goals - or no one wins the game. Communication, cooperation, and collaboration with the other islands will be required to ensure that the full federation develops and thrives.
Commerce in Spanish
Buying, selling, trading and negotiating can happen only in the Archipelago's lingua franca, Spanish.
Resilience and Flexible Thinking: Buena Suerte, Mala Suerte - Good Luck, Bad Luck
Each week the island governors will receive luck cards The students will need to adapt to their sudden change in island wealth or health, re-configure strategies to address new obstacles, seize opportunities, and develop resilience in the face of unexpected adversity.
Message in a Bottle: La Reina del Archipielago (Writing in Spanish)
In the Archipelago game, as in life, effort and hard work can temper the effects of bad luck. Students who need supplies, financial backing, or extra support can send a convincing Spanish message in a bottle to the Queen of the Archipelago who may, or may not, grant assistance.
Vocabulary Acquisition
Playing the game requires reading and speaking new Spanish vocabulary words constantly. Each set of game cards represents a vocabulary group. The repetition required by the game facilitates solid and lasting acquisition.
