BRAIN CHILD

Spanish and Creative Confidence
Brief Description: Earmuffs, popsicles and trampolines - all invented by children - this class looks at the real, important and tangible contributions of child inventors, artists, composers and innovators throughout history. While we will also take a look at inventions made with children in mind, the class will heavily emphasize child-driven innovations in all areas of life.
Language Acquisition
Conducted in Spanish with ample opportunities for review and repetition, children will acquire useful Spanish vocabulary while building their own creative confidence as thinkers, inventors and problem-solvers. In addition to natural acquisition opportunities (learning by hearing and doing), we will use repetitive techniques, muscle memory (kinesthetic learning and gross motor) and will also begin to consciously build sentences using topic-relevant regular, -ar verb conjugations, and learning word order and gender concordance.
Building Projects in Spanish
We will draw, make, build, design and create. Each class project will, in some way, relate to or build upon the creative genius of some of the world's youngest innovators. These projects provide a free-thinking space, allowing the student to create with his/her hands, explore what it means to put an idea onto paper, build a prototype of everyday materials, and inspire the children to bring their ideas to life through perseverance, creative resilience, and trial and error.
Creativity Rules
I will place a heavy emphasis on open-ended creative experimentation and the importance of fearless mistake-making. The projects will not be pre-designed by me, rather I will give the children materials and "creativity rules" or guidelines within which the children will need to work. The highest level of creativity and flexible problem-solving is typically achieved when working with and responding to the challenges of externally imposed restraints.
