COSMIC CONVERSATION
Speak, plan, vote, build.
Please note: This class is an advanced competency Spanish class and is only appropriate for children who have either demonstrated the capacity to thrive in a total immersion environment or have attained a high level of receptive proficiency (comprehension.)
Brief Description: Before our children reach adulthood it is highly likely that plans for a new colony somewhere in the cosmos will begin to take shape. What would humanity need to survive? What elements of life on earth should be exported and replicated? What errors should we take care to avoid? How will we organize the new community for maximum comfort, protection, justice, ingenuity, beauty, efficiency and cooperation? What do we really need? What is superfluous? What do we bring with us? What do we leave behind?
Weekly Interrogation: Speaking Practice
Each class will open with a collaborative interrogation; the children will ask the leaders of the class questions in Spanish to discover the topic of the day and to earn a new image to add to their evolving group Colony in the Cosmos.
Speaking Games in Spanish
The children will regularly engage in topic-relevant games designed to build oral fluency and conversational comfort.
Vocabulary Acquisition and Review
This class provides a highly-engaging, novel framework through which the children will continue to expand a broad base of Spanish vocabulary; the words necessary for building worlds and conversations. The class subject matter naturally builds on present, conditional, and future tense grammar constructions.
Spanish and Democratic Decision-Making (Writing and Reading Component)
Each week we will review and vote on two potential (real or imaginary) solutions to the practical challenges of daily living in the cosmos; Sustainable housing, food growth and preparation, waste management, government, health, leisure, art, beauty, etc. The children will need to submit a written vote for the element they would like to add to our blueprint: "El Gran Plan: El Libro de La Vida en el Mundo Nuevo (The Great Plan: The Book of Life in the New World.)"
Leadership - Presidente/a y Ministro/a
Each month a different pair of children will lead the class as president and minister, presenting two design or survival options for the New World, reading aloud the advantages and disadvantages, and maintaining El Gran Plan. This piece does not require preparation or homework.
Art and Creative Problem-Solving
After thinking about and voting on solutions for human survival and society in the cosmos, the children will then design, build, draw, paint or sketch a solution of their own
