Documentation or Falsification?
Let's talk about photography and falsehoods
Advanced Spanish Conversation, Imagery and Imagination
Brief Description: Each week we will use conversation about photography and technologically-enhanced (or adapted) photo imagery as a basis for building new vocabulary. Using the authentic, iconic and child-friendly work of well-known, widely-acclaimed photographers such as Ansel Adams, Annie Leibovitz, Dorothea Lange, and Steve McCurry alongside "fake," highly manipulated imagery on the Internet, the children will practice using descriptive vocabulary to analyze images, identify photography falsehoods, and think intentionally about the ways in which current technology allows us to blur the line between truth and fact, imagination and documentation. The class is designed to foster a Spanish conversation about visually compelling imagery and the power of such images to convey ideas, capture or manipulate truths, as well as to describe visual material in Spanish.
Critical Thinking Skills
In addition to the heavy focus on Spanish language production, the class is also designed to help students analyze photographs and photo-shopped imagery, developing the ability to think critically about truth vs. falsehood, fiction and non-fiction, imagination and innovation.
Collage and Mixed Media Art in Spanish
After each class discussion the children will make art of their own exploring the theme of the day. Using collage, drawing, painting, decoupage and other techniques, we will find different (non-technological, multi-sensorial) ways to manipulate photographic imagery. Each child will have an opportunity to engage in his/her hands-on study of what it means to alter and play with photographic images, and develop one's own aesthetic sense through trial and error. I place a heavy emphasis on open-ended creative experimentation and embracing the ever-present reality of mistake-making in the evolution of creative process and expression.
