SPANISH, CREATIVITY &
INNOVATIVE THINKING

SPANISH, CREATIVITY & INNOVATIVE THINKING COURSE DESCRIPTION
For a period of a month or more (depending on our level of intrigue and inspiration) we will take a look at a single common everyday material, object, or shape and explore its properties through experimentation, purposeful play, games, and art. Together we will reframe the uses and purposes of mundane materials in unique, unexpected, and creative ways. By pushing ourselves to exhaust the creative possibilities provided by a single material, the children will naturally employ innovative, unconventional, and resourceful thinking.

For example, when we explore the properties of cork, we will establish the fact that cork floats, is pliable, and light, we will study traditional uses for cork  (shoes, wine bottles, trivets) and then experiment to come up with unconventional uses for cork and corks. Together we may engage in any or all of the following: develop new games using corks (bowling? boat races? tenuous tower building?), create "cork trolls," fashion cork bracelets with cork sheets, paint cork trivets, etc. Other everyday materials I may bring in for the focal point of our playful study: glass marbles, rubber bands, straws, magnets, wood, etc.

All of the above takes place, of course, entirely in Spanish. Our play and experimentation with materials provides a natural (and relevant) context for language acquisition and language repetition, as well as spontaneous language production in the comfortable, creative space I plan to create.
