THE ART OF STORYTELLING
Spanish Conversation, Picture Books and Illustration
Brief Description:
Using wordless and artful children's books as a focal point for conversation, the children will employ descriptive Spanish vocabulary to take turns narrating high-quality and award-winning wordless picture books. Each class will feature a new and different wordless visual story whose captivating, child-centric illustrations will serve as a concrete visual reference for stimulating conversation. These aesthetic masterpieces designed for children will deepen our understanding of the power of visual storytelling and teach us to become visual storytellers ourselves.
Grappling with Language
One of the most powerful driving mechanisms for improving speaking in conversation is to consistently stumble upon what one cannot say, what one doesn't know and to grapple with the frustration of being at a loss for words. The framing of the class is designed to expose holes in the children's vocabulary and, as such, to continue widening and deepening language production.
Children's Book Design and Illustration
Depending on either the creative vision of each student or the amount of time he or she is enrolled in the class, each child will create single, one-page visual stories per class or build a 12-page children's book of their own from start to finish.
Please note: the books featured above are a sampling of potential titles we may explore - I always tailor the curriculum to the actual interests of the children enrolled and may adapt the book list accordingly.
