Slam and I narrate farm footage, sing Old MacDonald one last time with me and learn a brand new, never heard before song for washing hands during the pandemic :)

Watch Slam learning about a chick hatching from an egg (un pollito sale del cascarón)
Slam and I narrate a clip about a chicken laying an egg (una gallina pone un huevo)
Sing Tío Miguel with me one last time...
During the quarantine I have often been thinking about how difficult it is to get young children to wash their hands well throughout the day, how often they touch their faces (and everything!) and how nervewracking that must be for parents right now.

I wrote this song as a friendly, musical Public Service Announcement for the young ones among us.

Maybe the chorus will be catchy enough to stick in their minds as a kind reminder? And maybe as they wash their hands they can also learn some Spanish?

¿Jugaste afuera? (te lavas las manos)
¿Usaste el baño? (te lavas las manos)

Te lavalavalavalavalavas las manos (twice)

Camello tries to identify the sounds of real farm animals and Lobito brags about eating farm animals and then gets completely spooked by them :)

Camello plays a game in which he is charged with identifying the sounds of farm animals. He does fairly well :) Can you play along with him at home?

I also ask him to identify the sound of a camel...see how he does with that one!
Lobito is a wolf who pretends to be a tough guy but is easily spooked...in this clip I ask him if he is afraid of sheep
And now if he is afraid of cows...?
Draw a pig with me and then see what happens when I show Lobito my drawing...maybe he IS a tough guy...
But now let's see how Lobito reacts to a "live" pig...

(Heads up: If your child startles easily you might want to skip this one...or preface by saying that Lobito pretends he eats pigs and then actually gets scared of a pig and shouts at the end...just so that they can anticipate what is coming.)

A Slideshow about ovejas (with dyed fur)...and Slam gets a hair-brained idea (ridiculous, corny pun)...final in this post = vocabulary recall video

Below: Between us, I think Slam may be spending a little too much time indoors! He is missing his children friends and getting a little desperate for entertainment ;)
This is a vocabulary "test" to see how many of the words the kids remember. If you see that there are certain words that aren't easily recalled, you might go back and find a past video that reinforces the missing word. Or just play this video a couple of times during this final Farm Unit week. Hope they do well!

Presentando...la bandera azul (o turquesa), una canción del gato y los hermanos nacho (a.k.a. los ratones)

Slam continues to do his best to present the color flags without too much error or drama...this time there is a slight controversy about what the flag color should be called:
A new song about gatos:

Soy un gato
Tengo bigotes
Soy un gato
Y siempre maullo
Tengo orejas puntiagudas
Y garras afiladas
Los Ratones (a.k.a. the Nacho Brothers) help review some vocabulary

Feltboard stories, the difference between "gallos y gallinas" and a rare appearance from Slam's mom when Slam refuses to return my toys.

4/21/2020

Children often have a hard time keeping these two straight (and understanding their differences), so Camello comes on the scene to make some crazy jokes and help build associations:
There is a "pollito" hidden in one of the eggs...and there are also two "peligroso" (dangerous) eggs in the bunch...
Playing with scale and size is always fun for young children who daily grapple with the reality of  their own smallness in relation to the scale of a world built for adults...
In many of my classes the children request an appearance from Slam's mom on an almost weekly basis. I don't bring her onto the scene very often, Slam is a pretty autonomous guy and he tends to have separation issues when she comes around...but for some reason the kids LOVE having his mom show up. So...here she is...helping me with a little discipline and communication issue!

Cerdos and Prepositions

For some reason the below video isn't showing a still photo even after multiple re-uploads. But if you press the triangle you should be able to see the video to watch Slam get into a bit of a fix...
Slam tries to introduce himself to a "rude" pig who doesn't respond to his attempts to engage:
Slam helps me narrate this slideshow - if you click on the arrows and make this one full screen Slam will be easier to see...

Slam gets excited about fences in this post...

4/16/2020

In this video Slam gets confused because the word "cerca" can mean both close and fence, so he plays with the word a little to help make an association.

(There are other words for fence, too, in Spanish there are often regional variations.)
In this one Slam helps me read (and discuss) a slideshow about fences made of all kinds of crazy things... I hope this new tech approach will help me read more effectively to the kids for early literacy work.

If you expand this to full screen Slam's face (and mine) might be easier to see:
Slam likes the photo of the dog with its snout in the fence and wants to do something similar. In these two clips we are practicing the words "hocico" (snout) and  the preposition "detras" (behind)...but I also know the kids typically enjoy seeing Slam's face framed in a crazy way.

Trabajo de la Granja

4/14/2020

Slam and I headed to a virtual farm to teach and sing about the work that happens there.

Please forgive the occasional, irregular green screen glitches...Slam sometimes finds it hard to follow directions and stay still for the camera ;)
Manejemos el tractor...

A trabajar, a trabajar, a trabajar...todos tenemos que ayudar
Acariciemos la oveja...
A trabajar, a trabajar, a trabajar...todos tenemos que ayudar

Montemos a caballo...
A trabajar, a trabajar, a trabajar...todos tenemos que ayudar

Cosechemos las manzanas...
A trabajar, a trabajar, a trabajar...todos tenemos que ayudar

Camello draws a farm animal, Tractor drawing and game playing with Slam, and a very strange farmer song!

Camello creates a surprise drawing of a "farm animal" while we try to guess which farm animal it is...
You will need a drawing tool and piece of paper for the next one...tractor drawing! Send your results to me if you'd like and I will post the collection.
¡Qué horror, qué horror! Un animal me robó el tractor...
Truly a very strange and silly song...but building these kind of visual and auditory associations helps tremendously with vocabulary acquisition...so ándale!

Había un hombre con cabello
En el cabello un caballo

Había un hombre con dos orejas
En las dos orejas, dos ovejas

Había un hombre con dos mejillas
En las dos mejillas, dos gallinas

Había un hombre con una barba
En la barba, una cabra

Feltboard Stories and Slam plays with "lana" (wool or yarn)

Hay pájaros en el granero
Hay pájaros en el granero
Viene un espantapájaros
Y dice..."Boo"

¿Dónde está la oveja negra?
I am making an oveja with "lana" (wool, yarn) and Slam gets interested in the artistic medium ;)

Slam con su oveja y la bandera verde, a mystery vegetable from my garden, and a traditional farm song (with pictures)

What does a sheep say?

Note: Animals often have different sounds in different languages, but when I am teaching Spanish I intentionally always use the English sounds to give children clear contextual clues for the more important learning, the target vocabulary words.

(Also, sometimes animal sounds vary by region!)
Can you guess which vegetable is growing in our mini garden?

It is larga...anaranjada...dura...
Caballito blanco
Llévame de aquí
Llévame a mi pueblo
Dónde yo nací
Tengo, tengo, tengo
Tengo una granja
Tengo tres ovejas
En una cabaña
Una me da leche
Otra me da lana
Otra mantequilla para la semana

Counting clouds until Mamá Búho shows up to contradict me and reveal a visual surprise
The tyranny of choice for the small child (and adult!): I ask Slam to choose a sheep gift but he has a VERY hard time figuring out which to take:

Emotions work, a Slam skit

4/2/2020

Grab a piece of string or yarn and practice describing emotions with me:
Slam looks around his messy garbage can for my "caballos blancos" and has a hard time staying focused on the task ;) (this is actually listening practice for achieving a higher level of auditory fluency)

Storytime and a Vocabulary Competition with Camello

4/1/2020

La Granja Storytime below - Slam makes a surprise appearance at the end (in case knowing that in advance helps the kids stay with the book right through to the end):
Watch this next video a couple of times until the kids know the words...then turn on the Camello video (the one right below) to compete with him to say the words quickly:
Are you ready to play a game with Camello to say the words as fast as you can? If so...start the video below!
Camello is having a hard time processing the fact that he lost the game, so I need to give him a little extra love:
